CBT Training

CBT or ‘Compulsory Basic Training’ is the first step in learning to ride. It’s a course that’s broken down in to five parts, which we’ll take you through at your own pace. Here’s an idea of what to expect when you choose to train with us…

Arrival

  • We’ll welcome you to the training scheme and get you signed-in
  • We’ll make sure you have refreshments – tea, coffee, soft drinks and even donuts
  • You’ll be introduced to your friendly instructor, then we’ll begin…

Element A – Introduction:

  • You’ll learn about CBT and why it is required
  • You’ll learn about helmets and different protective clothing
  • We’ll answer any questions you may have

Element B – Practical on-site training:

  • We’ll introduce you to your motorcycle or scooter
  • You’ll learn about the controls needed to ride
  • You’ll learn some basic maintenance to keep you riding safely

Element C – Practical on-site riding:

  • This is where we really get you going!
  • You’ll learn how to start and ride a bike or scooter
  • You’ll learn about braking, gears, indicators and observation
  • You’ll learn how to manoeuvre bends and junctions

Element D – Practical on-road training:

  • This is where we get you ready to ride on the road
  • We’ll discuss a variety of common riding situations
  • You’ll learn about hazard awareness, anticipation and reaction
  • Basically, we’ll make sure you’re ready to ride the streets

Element E – Practical on-road riding:

  • You’ll be on the road, one-to-one with your instructor
  • For a minimum of 2-hours we’ll monitor and refine your riding
  • We’ll start slowly with simple routes, then go further afield
  • There’s absolutely no rush and no pressure – we’re here for as long as it takes
  • Once we’re both comfortable our work is done!

When you have satisfactorily completed all five elements you will be issued with a Certificate of Completion of Training, commonly called a DL196 or “CBT certificate”. This is a legal document, which serves to validate the relevant entitlements on the valid driving licence – i.e. You can ride on your own and start to develop your skills.

Remember, you’re still a learner and must comply with all appropriate legislation for the relevant licence category, but if you want to learn more we’ll be happy to have you back.

Your CBT Certificate (DL196 certificate) lasts for 2 years. You need to re-take CBT if both theory/practical tests are not passed within 2-years of passing your last CBT course.

Training is only available to Club Members.  By taking training with us you will become a training member of the Southern Sporting Motor Cycle Club.
